Paphos warns of charges if landowners don’t clean up

Paphos municipality is urging landowners to clear areas of all weeds and waste materials in the next few weeks, or face removal costs.
The announcement said that land and other open spaces must remove all overgrown shrubs and rubbish by May 22, or they will have to pay the costs incurred by the municipality for its removal.
“After the expiry of that period, the municipality will send crews in to clean those open private spaces which are necessary, and the municipality will require owners to pay the costs for that purpose.”
The municipality added that if the cleaning which will be undertaken by the owner is considered unsatisfactory, the municipality will carry out additional or total cleaning. It stressed that the liability for cleaning rests with the owner of the unit, even if items have been placed there by others or are discarded waste materials from third parties.
“It is the owner’s responsibility to keep it clean.”
It added that the charge would be made depending on the volume of material that will need to be removed, but in any case will not be less than €60 per load.
The statement noted that those who maintain machinery or other sizeable items on private open space, will need to move them in order for proper cleaning to take place. In cases where these items have to be cleaned around or removed or by the municipality, it said it would not bear any responsibility for any costs of loss or damage.
