Renowned Turkish Cypriot artist Umit Inatci will open his first solo exhibition in Paphos later this week at the Municipal Art Gallery.

Inatci spent his formative years in Moutallos, Paphos, although he was born in Limassol in 1960, as at the time hospital facilities were better there and many pregnant women travelled to Limassol to give birth, he told the Cyprus Mail.

“Paphos is a special place for me and, although I have participated in group exhibitions in Paphos, this will be my first exhibition solo,” he said.

Inatci was nearly 15 in 1974 when he had to leave Paphos and was taken by bus with a group of other youngsters to Paramali and the British bases, and then to the north of the island.

“As I grew up in Paphos, which is where my mother and father are from, it was a very painful experience to leave a city where I had so many connections,” he recalled.

Inatci has been interested in art since he was a small child and his work reflects cultural anthropology, a source of inspiration to him, and the origin of art, he said.

“Hermetic layers and ritual behaviour as an artistic language are the main characteristics of my work.”

Abstract symbols, pictograms and the geometry of spaces are some of the elements reflected in his creations.
